Understanding ERCP:

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized procedure that combines endoscopy and X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts, pancreas, and gallbladder. During the procedure, a flexible tube (endoscope) is passed through the mouth, esophagus, and stomach into the duodenum, allowing the doctor to visualize and treat obstructions, stones, or strictures in the bile or pancreatic ducts.

Stenting in ERCP:

In cases where the bile ducts or pancreatic ducts are blocked, stenting may be necessary. A stent (a small tube) is placed inside the duct to keep it open, allowing bile or pancreatic fluids to flow normally. This is often done to relieve symptoms caused by blockages, such as jaundice, abdominal pain, or pancreatitis.

Why is ERCP Done?

  • Removing bile duct stones or pancreatic duct stones.
  • Treating blockages in the bile or pancreatic ducts caused by tumors, scar tissue, or pancreatitis.
  • Placing stents to relieve obstructions in the ducts.
  • Taking biopsies for further analysis of abnormal growths or strictures.
  • Diagnosing and treating bile duct leaks after surgery.
